New Flooring Preparation Guide

Thank you for choosing Dominion Floor Covering for your flooring project! To ensure a smooth and efficient installation, please follow these preparation guidelines:

1. Personal Effects & Furniture

  • Clear the Area: Move all personal items, decorations, and furniture from the rooms where the new flooring will be installed. If Dominion Floor Covering is moving furniture, please ensure all personal effects are removed prior to our arrival.
  • Fragile Items: Remove any breakable or valuable items from nearby areas to prevent accidental damage.
  • Closets and Cabinets: Empty closets, cabinets, and any other built-in storage units in the installation area. Typically, only the bottom of closets will need to be cleared out to allow our installers access to your floor.

2. Electrical & Plumbing

  • Disconnect Appliances: If flooring is being installed in areas with appliances (kitchen, laundry room), please disconnect and move them. If Dominion Floor Covering is moving appliances, please ensure there is access to the outlets and make the installers aware of any potential issues with moving the appliance.
  • Plumbing Fixtures: If necessary, please disconnect any plumbing fixtures to avoid any potential issues during installation. Dominion Floor Covering will remove/reseal commodes, sinks and vanities if necessary (additional charges will apply).

3. Loud Noises & Dust

  • Expect Noise: The installation process will involve loud noises, including sawing and hammering. Plan accordingly, especially if you have young children or pets.
  • Dust and Debris: The process will generate dust and debris. While we take precautions to minimize it, you may want to cover items in adjacent rooms or areas to protect them from dust. Newly installed carpet may “shed” as the carpet “blossoms” over the first few weeks post-installation – this is normal and not indicative of any defects.

4. Access & Safety

  • Clear Access: Ensure clear pathways to the installation area for our team to move materials and equipment easily.
  • Parking: Our installers will need to park close to the installation site in order to efficiently complete the flooring installation. Please ensure there is ample parking outside of the jobsite and make your Dominion Floor Covering representative aware of any accommodations that may need to be made.
  • Safety First: Keep children and pets away from the installation area for their safety and to allow our team to work efficiently.

5. Environmental Conditions

  • Room Temperature: Maintain a consistent room temperature (65-80°F) in the installation area for at least 48 hours before and after installation to ensure proper acclimation and installation of the flooring materials. Carpet will require slightly higher room temperatures (over 70°F preferably).

6. After Installation

  • Ventilation: Properly ventilate the installation area to help dissipate any residual dust or odors.
  • Cleaning: Our team will clean up after the installation, but a final thorough cleaning is recommended.
